Renewable Natural Gas Enhances Energy Resilience During B.C. Cold Snap
During the frigid week of February 10, 2025, British Columbia’s Lower Mainland experienced a surge in energy demand. Notably, since January 1, FortisBC has integrated Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) into its supply, ensuring that at least 2% of the gas heating homes originates from decomposing organic waste.
FortisBC’s Commitment to Sustainable Energy
FortisBC’s initiative involves blending RNG, derived from landfills, agricultural operations, and wastewater treatment facilities, into the existing natural gas infrastructure. This approach not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also utilizes established gas systems efficiently. Joe Mazza, vice president of energy supply and resource development at FortisBC, emphasized the importance of this strategy in leveraging current infrastructure to deliver low-carbon energy solutions.
Customer Participation and Options
All FortisBC gas customers automatically receive a 2% blend of RNG in their gas supply. While opting out of this blend isn’t available, customers interested in further reducing their carbon footprint can choose to increase their RNG usage up to 100% by contacting FortisBC directly.
